Conference on the Past, Present and Future of Metallurgy was Held

The conference on ‘The Past, Present and Future of Metallurgy’ organised by the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of our university was held with the participation of KTU Rector and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI, Department Founder Prof. Dr. Fazlı ARSLAN and Department Head Prof. Dr. Aykut ÇANAKÇI. The conference held in the Department Amphitheatre was attended by the faculty members of the Department and many students. The conference started with a moment of silence and the Turkish National Anthem.

Prof. Dr. Aykut ÇANAKÇI, Head of the Department, stated that the background of this department has been created with great efforts and a good dynamism has been achieved in return for the efforts made, and emphasised that more and more efforts are being made every day to train highly educated and well-equipped engineers for the sector. He advised the young engineer candidates to evaluate the projects throughout their education life by ensuring maximum participation in the activities organised. He also emphasised that KTU Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department will provide full support in the execution of projects such as BAP 09, TUBITAK 2209 and TAI LIFT UP for undergraduate students.

Information was given about the history and interests of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and our department.

Prof. Dr. Fazlı ARSLAN, who has the biggest role in the establishment of this department, shared with the participants some of the events he experienced from the history of the establishment of the department. He mentioned that the most popular department abroad at that time was ‘Metallurgy’, and how popular it was under the name of ‘Materials Science’ in general terms with the developing technology. He shared brief information about Metallurgical and Materials Engineering after the history of its establishment. There was great interest in the event organised by the Department. It was aimed especially for the first-year students among the participants to get to know the history of the department, its interests, the branches of science it deals with in general terms, and to deepen their enthusiasm for the department they have chosen.

In the last part of the programme, KTU Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI mentioned the place and importance of this department in the sector and emphasised that KTU has an outstanding brand value. He shared his valuable advice with the students by referring to the feedback he received from his former students who are in management positions in the sector. After the speech of Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI, plaques and gifts were presented to our valuable participants by the faculty members of the department.
