Dietitians Gathered at Our University for the Event on Clinical Nutrition

In collaboration with Karadeniz Technical University, KEPAN Association, the Turkish Dietitians Association, and the Trabzon Provincial Representation of the Turkish Dietitians Association, an event titled "Trabzon Dietitian Meeting: Cornerstones of Clinical Nutrition" was organized at our university's Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Center (OKM). The event brought together expert dietitians from across Türkiye.

The event, held in the OKM Hasan Turan Hall, was attended by our Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Akif CİNEL, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Bahittin KAHVECİ, Trabzon Provincial Health Director Dr. Hakan USTA, KEPAN Association President Prof. Dr. Mutlu DOĞANAY, Turkish Dietitians Association President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan DAĞ, as well as academics and students.

The program began with opening speeches by our University's Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Bahittin KAHVECİ, KEPAN Association President Prof. Dr. Mutlu DOĞANAY, Turkish Dietitians Association President Assoc. Dr. Ayhan DAĞ, Trabzon Provincial Health Director Dr. Hakan USTA, and our Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI. Our rector featured remarks emphasizing the education of dietitian candidates, including students admitted to the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2022. In his speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah ÇUVALCI noted that in addition to hosting such events, they also plan to organize many more activities contributing to the dietitians’ professional development. He said, "We, as Karadeniz Technical University, are not only hosting events like this but also planning to organize many more activities that will contribute to the dietitians’ professional development." He expressed gratitude to the KEPAN Association, the Turkish Dietitians Association, and the KTU Department of Nutrition and Dietetics for their contributions to the organization of the event. Additionally, he stated, "We will collaborate to make our efforts more active to enhance the skills of our future dietitians and promote scientific contributions in this field."

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at our university, Prof. Dr. Bahittin KAHVECİ, highlighted the essential role of nutritional therapy as an integral component of modern medicine in his opening speech. He emphasized that nutritional therapy has the potential to improve the prognosis of diseases. Prof. Dr. KAHVECİ underscored the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals such as doctors, dietitians, nurses, and pharmacists in the field, stating, "It is known that early nutritional therapy in medium-sized hospitals saves 1 million euros annually. Therefore, effective and efficient nutrition teams, including hospital management, are needed for successful nutrition therapy."

During the first session of the event chaired by Prof. Dr. Akif CİNEL and Prof. Dr. Bahittin KAHVECİ, RD. Fatma TURANLI from Acıbadem Maslak Hospital presented on "Hospital Malnutrition and Treatment Methods," and RD. Birgül DAĞ from Lokman Hekim University Department of Nutrition and Dietetics provided information on "Methods of Assessing and Monitoring Nutritional Status." In the second session, RD. Osman Zeki KAHRİMAN, the Representative of the Turkish Dietitians Association in Trabzon, addressed the topic of "Oral/Tube Enteral Nutrition and Complications." The third session featured Prof. Dr. Hülya ULUSOY from the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Intensive Care Unit at Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Medicine, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Melda KANGALGİL from the Faculty of Health Sciences, who shared insights on "Current Nutrition Therapy in Intensive Care Patients and Perioperative Period." The final session, chaired by Prof. Dr. Sinan SARI from Gazi University Faculty of Medicine and Prof. Dr. Kutay DEMİRKAN from Hacettepe University Faculty of Pharmacy, included Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet ULUŞAHİN, RD. Uğur BAYRAMOĞLU, and Serpil KANBEROĞLU discussing "Medical Nutrition Therapy Approach during the Perioperative Period in Cancer Patients.”

In the program, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazlı Nur ASLAN ÇİN from the Faculty of Health Sciences presented on the topic "Medical Nutrition Therapy Process from Blenderized Nutrition in Neurological Patients," while RD. Uğur BAYRAMOĞLU, a Dietitian from the Nutrition Support Team at Farabi Hospital, provided insights into "Medical Nutrition Therapy in Cancer Patients."

Participants were informed about the assessment methods of nutritional status, current nutrition therapy strategies, and patient monitoring through presentations by expert dietitians and academics. At the end of the program, Prof. Dr. Bahittin KAHVECİ, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, presented plaques to the Session Chair and speakers.
