The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering started its education in 1969 as the Department of Electrical Engineering within the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The first graduates of the department received the title of Electrical Engineer at the end of a five-year education program. In the following years, a four year undergraduate program was started. Those who successfully complete this program are given the title of Electrical Engineer. The department was named as the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1982 and was connected to the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, which was established with the law numbered 2547. 

Until the 1998-1999 academic year, the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering was offering undergraduate (Engineering) education with a four-year program.  In the seventh semester, students were choosing between "Electrical and Control" and "Electronics and Communication" branches. This practice, in which Electrical and Control branch graduates were given the title of Electrical Engineer only, and Electronics and Communication branch graduates only Electronics Engineer, was abandoned with the approval of the Higher Education Institution and it was decided to give a joint title as Electrical-Electronics Engineer to graduates of both branches. 

In the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, in the 1997-1998 academic year, 30% English and Evening Education programs started to be offered. In 30% English program of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, those who were successful in taking the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam would directly enroll in the first class. Those who could not pass this exam would study foreign language preparation class for one year.

Until 2018, The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, which offers education with Daytime Education and Evening Education programs, has been offering education in 100% English programs since 2018 and 100% Turkish programs since 2019. Only 100% English program students are subjected the Foreign Language Preparatory Class. 

Currently, around 160 new students are admitted to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering every year, 100 in the 100% Turkish program and 60 in the 100% English program.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has been accredited by MÜDEK (Engineering Education Programs Evaluation and Accreditation Association) until 2026. 

In the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering, in addition to undergraduate education, Master and Doctorate education is also offered. 

The laboratory facilities of the department are extensive. In some of the laboratories, undergraduate (Master's and Doctorate) studies can be carried out, and in addition to education and training, research and development features are tried to be increased to higher levels by making use of the opportunities of the KTU Research Fund. The equipment in the laboratories is open to use in a way that can provide the research-development, quality-control support that the country and regional institutions may need.
