KTU Students Earn International Recognition for Receiving Images from Space

KTU students successfully received and decoded image signals transmitted from the International Space Station (ISS), earning an international ARISS SSTV Award for their work.

The students took part in the 33rd ARISS SSTV event, held from October 2 to 6, 2026, as part of the İstasyOF Project led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer KASAR from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Of Faculty of Technology.

During the event, the students tracked the ISS as it orbited Earth and used Yagi antennas and amateur radio equipment to receive signals transmitted from approximately 400 kilometers above the planet. They then used Robot36 software to decode the Slow Scan Television (SSTV) signals and turn them into images.

The event, held under the theme "Student Education 2026," featured 12 images showcasing educational activities at schools and universities around the world. The KTU team successfully captured eight of them.

KTU Team Receives International ARISS SSTV Award

Organized through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, the event brought together amateur radio enthusiasts from around the world. The program is supported by NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and international amateur radio organizations.

The images were transmitted from the Russian segment of the ISS via an amateur radio system operating on the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band. Participating under the international call sign YM7XOF, the KTU İstasyOF team successfully received the signals and earned an ARISS SSTV Award certificate.

Beyond the award, the project gave students the opportunity to put their classroom knowledge into practice. Working directly with satellite communications, antenna systems, radio frequency technologies, and signal processing, they gained hands-on experience in areas closely related to their studies.

The project also highlighted KTU's work in space technologies and communication systems, bringing together academic learning and practical experience.

The images captured during the event were shared with the public through the official ARISS website.
