EADT Laboratory

ERDEM AKSOY EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN LABORATORY

The foundation of the Architecture Laboratory was laid in 1974, and the construction was completed in 1976.

The laboratory was built by making use of its own resources as well as the UNDP project. In 2006, it was named Erdem Aksoy Experimental Design Laboratory.

On the ground floor of the laboratory, there is a hall where the panels are placed for presentations. Models in 1/1 scale, which can easily move in three dimensions, can be formed in the experimental area covering approximately 400m2. Also, photographs and films can be taken from all angles of the experimental setups by lighting them differently. Each experiment performed can be viewed from a common gallery surrounding the experimental area. Around this gallery, special experimental rooms such as "Acoustic", "Lighting", "Thermal Environment, and "Anthropometric Measurements" cover an area of 200 m2. There is also a "Wind Tunnel" in the experimental area. Please visit the page for detailed information about the laboratory

The purpose of the laboratory is to conduct experiments on user comfort against environmental factors, prepare scaled models that may be required for consultancy services and conduct experimental studies on them, evaluate the findings, and perform numerical measurements.

It is possible to benefit from the Architecture Laboratory with special research, institutional research (such as TÜBİTAK, Ministries), and thesis studies. These studies can be carried out subject to laboratory regulations.

ÖABDT Laboratory

ÖZGÖNÜL AKSOY COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN LABORATORY

The Computer Laboratory in the Faculty of Architecture, where 55 computers serve, is used by undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. The laboratory, which was divided into sections such as the technical office, mechanical, and material warehouse, has a usage area of 240 m2.

The Computer-Aided Design Laboratory was named after Özgönül AKSOY in 2006. In this laboratory, undergraduate and graduate students at 3 departments in the Faculty of Architecture are instructed on how they can benefit from information technologies in their professional fields.

Autocad, Adobe Photoshop, ArchiCAD 16, Photospace, LayOut 2014, Sketchup 2014, SPSS 12.0, Style Builder 2014, and Autodesk 360 are installed on the computers in the lab. Users can work either through installed programs or access the Internet on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

The ÖABDT Laboratory carries out an important service in the education process of the Faculty of Architecture with its hardware capacity that has been developed and renewed since its establishment.

Digital Design Research and Fabrication Unit

DIGITAL DESIGN RESEARCH AND FABRICATION UNIT

In December 2018, KTU Computational Design and Fabrication Unit (KTU CODE FAB) was officially established, reporting to the Erdem Aksoy Experimental Design Laboratory at the Faculty of Architecture, Karadeniz Technical University. The unit has rooms both in Erdem Aksoy Experimental Design Laboratory and Central Laboratory on the Kanuni Campus. These laboratories are used for R &D and undergraduate and graduate courses.

As part of the ongoing infrastructure project, CNC laser cutter, 3D printer, 3D scanner, robot arm (manipulator) and equipment, tools and equipment including various traditional production tools were procured and started to be used in KTU Computational Design and Fabrication Unit (KTU CODE FAB).

Studies on computational design and fabrication are handled at different levels within the curriculum of various theoretical undergraduate and master's courses and architectural design studios in the Department of Architecture. In order to have more profound and systematic studies, 4 undergraduate elective courses, as Numerical Modeling in Architecture I, II, III and Parametric Design and Applications, have been offered in different semesters since the 2015-2016 academic year fall semester. As of 2019, the Computational Design and Fabrication course has been started to be offered in the Master's program in Architecture. In addition, master's and doctoral theses are carried out in the field of computational design and fabrication.
