The Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering was established in 1996 as the Deck Department and started its education and training in the same year. Since 1998, English preparatory classes have been introduced. The English preparatory program is conducted by the School of Foreign Languages at the Karadeniz Technical University Kanuni (Central) Campus. 30% of the undergraduate courses are instructed in English. Education and training in the department are conducted in accordance with maritime customs and traditions, and cadets are also required to wear uniforms.
The curriculum of the Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering is prepared according to the STCW 78/2010 regulations (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). When cadets complete the first year, they undertake a 6-month, 15-credit First Sea-Training Internship, and upon completion of the fall semester of the third year, they undertake another 6-month, 30-credit Second Sea-Training Internship. Thus, students complete Section A-II/1 of the STCW 78, the first stage of education and training. Students who reach this stage are eligible to take the Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officer exam conducted by the Seafarers Examination Center. Those who continue and successfully complete the 7th and 8th semesters will have completed the A-II/2 training of the STCW 78. Graduates who have completed both training packages may enter Chief Officer (Unlimited) exam after completing 36 months of service as an Officer on Watch (OOW) on vessels. Those who complete 36 months of sea service with the qualification of are entitled to be a Master (Unlimited) by the exam.
Student exchange practices have been carried out between our department and some universities in European countries since 2005, within the framework of the Erasmus-Socrates programs.
In the Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering, practical training is conducted at the Muammer Dereli and Çamburnu Campuses located in the Sürmene District of Trabzon, while theoretical training is provided at our Faculty's Coastal Campus in the center of Trabzon. Our Coastal Campus is within a 10-minute walking distance to KTU Kanuni (Central) Campus and Trabzon Airport, equipped with classrooms and an amphitheater for theoretical classes. In the department, 2 Full Mission Bridge Simulators, GMDSS simulator, ECDIS simulator, Tanker simulator, Engine Room simulator, Navigation, Seamanship, Safety at Sea are available. Department also has Maritime Safety Training Centre. Additionally, at our Muammer Dereli Campus, there is a modern KYK dormitory building to meet the accommodation needs of students and a closed sports hall where they can engage in sports activities. The compliance of the education and training in the department with the IMO STCW 78 Convention has been approved by the Independent Audit Board of the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs. In addition, the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System approved by the International Classification Society RINA is implemented in the Department. Moreover, it is also a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU).
In addition to undergraduate education in the Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering, courses for certification (STCW 78, A-II/2, A-II/1, A-II/3) and all STCW 78/95 and ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) courses for crew and officer classes are provided.
Graduates can work in public institutions such as the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, Turkish and foreign-flagged vessels, port operators, and various maritime companies engaged in various activities.
